What is it:
Calpis is my favorite milk based beverage in Japan. Unfortunately, in its original form it contains way too much sugar and is non conforming to a LC lifestyle. That is where the Amino version comes in! It contains zero sugar and is sweetened with erythritol :) and unfortunately, the normal cocktail of artificial sweeteners that I am finding more and more often with sugarless products are also listed on the ingredient list.
Taste: Tastes very much like a light version of the original.
Price: Costs the same as the original. ( about $1.25 for 16 ozs)
Verdict: Although Amino Calpis is fortified with 6 different Amino acids and is a natural probiotic. The cocktail of sweeteners does this beverage a disservice and takes away from the from the overall health benefits of drinking this beverage. Therefore this is regulated to the drink as a treat once in a blue moon arena. If you love Calpis and need a fix give it a whirl :)

I've never heard of this product. What does it taste like, LC? Is it like vanilla-ish milk? It sounds like it's sweeter than regular milk, right? More info., por favor! :-)
Sure, Harry. It's very hard to describe as its a fermented milk product. It there is a soft bite to it kinda like lemonade..infact its kinda like a soft milky lemonade with hardly any taste of lemon.. I never had anything like it before coming to Japan and I instantly fell in love with it after trying it a couple times. Its derived from lactic acid. Here is a link to the USA internet site : http://www.calpis.net/
I wish I could describe it better.. :S
btw..I have been reading that alfalfa sprouts conatin a toxic amino acid and no form of alfalfa is safe.. have you come across any of this??
hmm..maybe I should have said its a Lactic Acid based drink hehe
A lot of artificially sweetened drinks DO have a "cocktail" of Frankenstein-like chemicals. But, like you said, it's ok once in a blue moon.
Anne: Yes, it is very sad to tell the truth..when I first started LC, I was not worried at all about AS but recently due to many blog posts and personal research I am staying away from them as much as possible.
Right now in Japan there is a sugarless rush as more and more products are being made for the VERY weight conscious crowd here in Japan.
To be brutally honest when I return home to the states for a visit, In my mind there is one general thought. "Everything is fat!" Now, don't get me wrong but everything is bigger in America, food, meat portions, peanut butter, drinks, houses, people etc..
Ofcourse, loving larger portions I always loved the bigger portions that I found in the states.
But now, I think the Japanese might be onto something... until they end up like us..everything is getting bigger and bigger here, too. LOL
LC,
I thought it might be easier if I posted my reply here too:
Personally, I would avoid alfalfa sprouts and focus on other healthier options like broccoli sprouts. The main reason why is due to a naturally occurring amino acid found in alfalfa called canavanine.

Thanks, Harry :) That confirms what I was reading in a book and on some forums which is really sad cuz i luv alfalfa sprouts :( but I can make do with broccoli sprouts :)
I just returned to the US from Japan after a two week visit. I love Calpis and found the Zero form in only one store. Calpis Zero compared to regular Calpis is sort of like comparing Diet Coke to regular Coke. At first, the two taste very similar, but then you get that funny after taste with Calpis Zero that you get with Coke Zero or Diet Coke. I drink a lot of Coke Zero so I am used to that after taste. I liked the Calpis Zero, and although I like regular Calpis, it tastes too sweet to me. Does anyone know how I can get Calpis Zero in the US?
